What We Offer

Ballet

Ballet is the basis for all western dance forms and is strongly recommended for all of our dancers at Harmony Dance Academy.Emphasis is placed on body alignment, arm position, turnout, flexibility, fluidity, precision, and strength. Ballet develops fine muscle control, balance, flexibility, and technique which is a tremendous benefit for all other forms of dance taught at Harmony. Strong ballet technique may be required for admission into advanced level classes. In addition ballet terminology and technique is typically used and expected in many other disciplines including most tap, jazz, acro, and lyrical classes.

Tap

Harmony Dance Academy offers a very progressive and advanced tap program. Tap is a style of dance characterized by the sound of the metal tap striking the floor.  Tap utilizes rhythm, syncopation, and sound in addition to movement.  An emphasis is placed on musicality, expression, and improvisation. Tap students are continually challenged with new steps and combinations at all levels. Advanced students are expected to be fluent with all core tap steps including the five basic time steps (both Buck and Rhythm variations).

Jazz

Jazz dance is a fun, expressive dance style that incorporates turns, jumps, and kicks with other steps that are used for all forms of dance.  An emphasis is placed on strength, flexibility and conditioning, as well as increasing memory and stamina for progressively complex and high energy combinations. Jazz classes utilize age-appropriate movements and music. Students will learn Luigi based broadway jazz but classes may also include elements of theater and lyrical jazz.

Acro

Acrobatics is similar to gymnastics but does not include any of the apparatus (balance beam, uneven bars, vault).Students will focus on acrobatic and tumbling moves that will enhance their dance skills and routines. An emphasis will be placed on flexibility, stretch, and balance to increase technique on an individual level. Students will be taught proper technique for landing and supporting one another in partner work. In addition, acro study at Harmony relies on a strong technical foundation. Acrobatic students are expected to be fluent in dance, particularly in ballet.

Pointe

Pointe is an extension of ballet training for intermediate/advanced students. Students are introduced to work in pointe shoes. Pointe or Pre Pointe work is added to regular ballet class when students have developed enough strength, balance, and technique.  Barre, center and traveling exercises challenge the dancer while working on strengthening the core and center of balance. Musicality, phrasing, and performance techniques are introduced at this level.  There is only one level of Pointe and students may repeat this level each year once approved.  Students may only take Pointe or begin Pre Pointe work with the approval of the director. Everyone is different, but in general, dancers must be a minimum of 11 years old.

Lyrical

Lyrical study is an expressive form of dance that incorporates elements of modern, ballet, and jazz techniques that emphasizes the storytelling quality of music . Lyrical dances are expressions of the music while relaxing some of the strict doctrines of classical study.  An emphasis is placed on grace and fluidity, musicality, and expressiveness to capture emotion through movement.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop is a popular, high energy and fast paced type of dance that emphasizes rhythm, isolations, and self-expression. Dance combinations include unique footwork and arm movements that are often seen in current music videos, but are appropriate for the class age range.

Ballroom

Ballroom dancing is a partnership dance where couples or individuals, using step-patterns, move rhythmically, expressing the characteristics of music. Ballroom dancing consists of two styles: the Smooth, or Standard, and the Rhythm, or Latin. The Smooth, Standard style focuses on the elegance, grace and fluidity of movement. Dancers rotate in a counter-clockwise direction, moving around the entire floor. The couple is constantly moving on the dance floor, transitioning from one place to the next in a fixed pattern. The Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz and Quickstep are danced in this manner.

The Rhythm, Latin style focuses on a display of vibrant energy and a personal flair. The couple’s dancing pattern is syncopated to the rhythm of the music. The couple usually dances in one spot on the dance floor. Included in this style are the East Coast Swing, Jive, Rumba, Bolero, Cha Cha, Mambo, Samba and Paso Doble.
